We decided to stray from our usual format for this vacation, since this was like no other vacation we have taken before. Below you will find our itinerary and links for each of our days on the trip. We took the Western Explorer tour and upgraded hotels as well as upgraded to Gold Leaf service. We highly recommend upgrading the train trip to Gold Leaf, which gave us the dome coach. We also recommend upgrading the hotels. We dealt with Renata Nowak of Runaway Travel, a most knowledgeable and organized travel agent. She provided great, very responsive service, and mailed us our tickets and complete itinerary (with all necessary vouchers) more than a month before our trip, which gave us time to get excited and gave us a comfortable feeling, knowing we had everything we needed. Because we went to the Canadian Rockies during the summer (high season), we planned our trip four months in advance (back in February). The best times to travel to the Canadian Rockies (if you wish to do so in the summer) is the end of June through the beginning of September. Since this is not a very big window, make your reservations early.

Itinerary

Day One - Vancouver
Arrive in Vancouver and transfer to our hotel. Spend the rest of the day exploring on our own.

Day Two - Kamloops
Transfer from our hotel to Pacific Central Station to board the Rocky Mountaineer for travel to Kamloops.

Day Three - Jasper
Reboard the Rocky Mountaineer and follow the Thompson River through the Monashee and Cariboo Mountains to Jasper National Park.

Day Four - Jasper
Experience Jasper, including a ride to the top of the Jasper Tramway, Pyramid Lake, Athabasca viewpoint, and Maligne Canyon.

Day Five - Lake Louise
Travel to Lake Louise in Banff National Park on one of the most scenic highways in the world, the Icefields Parkway. Highlights include visiting the Athabasca Glacier, Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls, Peyto Lake, and Lake Louise.

Day Six - Banff
Travel from Lake Louise to the town of Banff. Highlights include touring Yoho National Park, the Spiral Tunnels, Takakkaw Falls, and Emerald Lake.

Day Seven - Calgary
Travel from Banff to Calgary. Highlights include a gondola ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain and the Cave and Basin Centre.
